THIS WEEK'S MUTT: CAIN
Cain is a pit bull puppy at the Humane Society of Erie County with his two sisters. They are 16 weeks old now and looking for homes. HSEC has had them since they were not much bigger than guinea pigs. Cain is a little shy and needs work with his training, but he loves to cuddle and be loved on. He and his sisters are up to date on their vaccines and already have been fixed. Meet Cain and his sisters at the Humane Society of Erie County, 1911 Superior Street, Sandusky, or call 419/626-6220.

Magic is a 5-6 year old housebroken, crate-trained male Poodle/ Lhaso Apso Mix. He is very shy at first and needs some time to warm up to you. But Magic loves to cuddle once he gets to know you, does not mind other dogs or cats and does great on a leash. Stop in and meet with Magic and pick up an application in our front office. Meet Magic at the Erie County Dog Pound, 2900 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, next to the fairgrounds, or call 419/627-7607.
Baby Girl is making a return visit as our Morning Mix Mutt. She is a sweet and loving 3 1/2 year old boxer. Baby Girl likes children and is incredibly gentle. She has gone with the HSEC staff to multiple schools to give talks to students about what they do at the Humane Society. Baby Girl is spayed now, but had been overbred, giving her very long nipples from nursing countless pups. She does not like other dogs or cats and really needs to be the only pet in the home. She has been at the Humane Society since September and would love to find the right home. Please help us find her a fur-ever home!
Zoe is a female Chocolate Labrador/German Short-haired Pointer. This puppy's got a cute, nice personality with lots of energy. Since Zoe is less than 6 months old, we have the 6 - 6 rule: HCHS will not adopt to homes with children under 6 years. Zoe needs to be properly trained, and would be good for an active household, as she will need lots of walks exercise and playtime. She was not nourished properly so she has rickets which will require vitamins and good food from now on. She may have developmental issues as she ages. Zoe is a quick learner, and knows how to play fetch. See Zoe in person at the Huron County Humane Society located at 246 Woodlawn Ave (Rt. 18), Norwalk. Open Tuesday 1-6, Wednesday-Saturday 1-5; Closed Sunday Monday & Holidays.

Lucky is a female tan and white Beagle. She's 6 Years Old, and partially house trained, although there is never a guarantee, as pets may act differently in a new environment. Lucky is a former hunting dog who may like to explore again. She is very loving. Lucky plays with another Beagle named Piper also a female, but coloring is black, tan & white. Piper is a year old. They were brought in together. We are not sure, but Lucky may be Piper's mother. Unknown if either tolerates cats. They have been treated for fleas, wormed, heartworm tested, vet checked, vaccinated and spayed as all the adoptable pets are at HCHS located at 246 Woodlawn Ave (aka rte 18) in Norwalk. Huron County Humane Society has two special dogs that need your help.
Sonny is a tan 6 year old male yellow Labrador/German Shepherd mix who has entropion in both eyes. This means he had an injury or trauma to his eyes which resulted in scarring of the cornea. His eyelashes turn out. The condition can cause a decrease or loss of vision.
Huron County Humane Society is seeking a family to medically foster Sonny in order to apply ointment from three to five times per day to help ease the 24/7 scratchy feeling he is experiencing. He will need to have surgery and will need special care to prevent infection afterwards so is eyes heal properly.
Cher is Sonny’s sister. They came in together and are the same breed and age. The ideal foster pet parent and/or pet parent would be able to care for both of them. Sonny does not like other dogs except for Cher. The staff thinks he follows her around due to his poor eyesight. Sonny truly needs Cher as his seeing-eye dog as they go everywhere together.
HCHS will also need contributions to the Simon Fund to defer the expensive surgery and medications necessary to make Sonny comfortable.
Bucket List for a Dying Dog
A woman in Canada created a bucket list of adventures for her dying dog. Riina Cooke was devastated when her boxer named Romeo was diagnosed with inoperable bone cancer. So she made the best of a bad situation by making his last days on earth as enjoyable as possible by creating a bucket list for him. Romeo enjoyed a professional massage, rode in a fire engine, got a “pawdicure,” sat shotgun in a cop car, ate a giant cake on his last birthday, and was even allowed to eat a McDonald’s cheeseburger. It took about four months, but the friends managed to check off every item on the list before he was put down. Click here for his full bucket list.

DOG NEARLY DIES FROM EATING SUPER BOWL PARTY SNACKS
A Minneapolis-area dog underwent emergency surgery following the Super Bowl. Logan, a 9-and-a-half year old golden retriever, developed a life-threatening medical condition called “gastric dilatation and volvulus” (GDV) when he ate a plate of chicken wings and part of a football during a Super Bowl party. Some of the children at the party left a plate of chicken wings on an unattended chair. In addition to the ingested bones, the X-rays showed a rock that had been inside of Logan’s stomach for an unknown amount of time. A veterinary surgeon performed the emergency operation to remove the bones, football leather, and rock from the stomach. After Logan began getting sick, a quick trip to the family veterinarian saved Logan’s life, as it could have resulted in death. Anytime you notice a change in your dog’s behavior, you contact your family veterinarian as soon as possible.

RIP ELWOOD, WORLD'S UGLIEST DOG
Elwood, the New Jersey Chinese crested / Chihuahua mix has died at the age of 8. Elwood was crowned the world's ugliest dog in 2007 and later became the topic of a children's book preaching acceptance. His owner, Karen Quigley, says he died unexpectedly Thanksgiving morning. Elwood was dark colored and hairless — save for a puff of white fur resembling a Mohawk on his head. He was often referred to by fans as Yoda, or E.T., for his resemblance to those famous science-fiction characters. Quigley had rescued Elwood in 2005, when he was about nine months old. "The breeder was going to euthanize him because she thought he was too ugly to sell," Quigley has said. During his life, he appeared at more than 200 events that helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for animal rescue groups and nonprofit animal organizations.
RIP GIANT GEORGE
Giant George died peacefully on Thursday, October 17, surrounded by loved ones, one month before his eighth birthday. Giant George was officially verified by Guinness World Records as the World's Biggest Dog and the World's Tallest Dog. It wasn't long before George had made larger-than-life appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show & Live with Regis & Kelly and started working on his first book. George measured 42 5/8 inches high at the midpoint of the neck and he weighed 250 pounds, which is about 100 pounds more than an average Great Dane.
At home he slept in a queen-sized bed, and one of his hobbies was to ride around his family's neighborhood in a golf cart. While traveling to Chicago for his 2010 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, George was given a row of three airline seats to himself. He caused a commotion with fellow passengers visiting him to take photographs, and there were so many people coming to the front of the plane, the pilot ended up illuminating the 'fasten seat-belt' sign to get everyone to sit down.
2013 UGLIEST DOG ISN’T THAT UGLY
The World’s Ugliest Dog ® for 2013 is a four-year-old mutt mix, part beagle, basset and boxer named Walle who stole the title with his huge head, short thick stature which includes a hump back and duck waddle. A judge noted that, "This dog looked like he's been photo shopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals." Walle waddled away with $1,500 and he’ll be making the talk show rounds this week. Some people are complaining that this year's World's Ugliest Dog title went to a dog that was far from the ugliest.
